what is remington cap and ball worth?
i have a new model army 44 cap and ball made in 1863(i got date from remington by s.n.)its got Rep grips on it and about 10 percent bluing. i got it just to have a piece of history. anyone know what value might be?
Condition and provenance – those are the two factors that determine an antique firearm’s worth. Reproduction grips definitely affect worth – they lower it’s value.
An original, unmodified, working model that can be proven to have been owned by a noted Confederate general could bring as much as ten thousand dollars. A standard-issue, working revolver with replaced grips that was probably carried by a private in the Cavalry might bring three or four hundred dollars.
Are you sure the weapon itself, and not just the grips, is not a reproduction? I own several originals plus several reproductions of those originals – and with just a minimal touch-up, you can’t tell the difference. Always look for provenance as well as the serial number…even serial numbers can be altered!
