Who are “tinker bell” and “Lotus blossom” in the movie “Milk”?
In the film “Milk” Harvey says the following line:
“Okay, gentlemen, we’ve already got a tinker bell, a lotus blossom. We’ve got Jim and Dick in their three-piece suits. We need someone to manage things.”
I would like to know who are referred to as “tinker bell” and “lotus blossom” and why?
Political advisor Michael Wong (Kelvin Yu) was nicknamed “Little Yellow Lotus Blossom” as it refers to the usual emasculated Asian male epithets. A rather unambiguous reference to his being painted in a classic Chinese stereotype of a laundry worker performing women’s work.
Milk’s cabal is all white, with the exception of Wong as the only Asian-American man and the tragic latino Jack Lira (Diego Luna).
Anne Kronenberg (Alison Pill), is being referred to as “Tinker Bell” being the only woman (the lone lesbian) in this boys’ club.
Or it could refer to Jack Lira. Harvey himself according to Shultz, quickly began to referring to Lira as Taco Bell . Now this might have been a reference to Jack as little more than the spicy Mexican food that Harvey routinely devoured or perhaps, it was a campy reference to Jacks effeminate manner, his being a Mexican tinker bell if you will.
